SPRINGFIELD – The Home for Good Coalition issued the following statement after the Senate did not vote on HB624, legislation previously approved by the House to reduce homelessness, strengthen communities and advance public safety by improving housing and support services for people returning from prison:
“While we are disappointed the Senate did not act on this important policy, we remain committed to working with lawmakers to put in place a comprehensive strategy to support people returning from prison in a way that reduces risk of homelessness and poverty,” said Ahmadou Dramé, director of the Illinois Justice Project. “Home for Good is smart, compassionate policy designed to uplift people, all while reducing recidivism, saving taxpayer dollars and growing our economy. We celebrate the considerable progress our statewide, community-based coalition made this year, advancing this policy through the House and into Senate hearings. We will be back to get this across the finish line. We thank Sen. Adriane Johnson and Rep. Maurice West for their leadership on this important issue, but our work will not be done until everyone has a Home for Good.”
