Ste. Genevieve Middle School holds groundbreaking for Prop SG Project

STE. GENEVIEVE – Ste. Genevieve Middle School held a groundbreaking event to mark the start of construction of its addition during the school’s Open House Thursday, Aug. 24.

This is the second of several Prop SG groundbreaking events over the year and a half since voters approved the measure.

On Tuesday, April 6, 2022, voters in the Ste. Genevieve County R-II School District approved Proposition SG, a no-tax rate increase $20 million bond referendum, with 70.51 percent support. The purpose of Prop SG is to help fund facility needs identified through our district’s long-range Facilities Plan. This bond issue will encompass an Early Childhood Center, as well as renovations and additions in the areas of accessibility, safety and security, and activities throughout the district.

At this time, construction on this project is anticipated to take approximately nine months. Over the past few weeks, construction crews began dirt work for the addition, which will span three floors in order to make Ste. Genevieve Middle School accessible. Along with an elevator, the three floors include: a corridor connected to the nurse’s office on the basement level; a new counseling suite on the first floor; and bathrooms on the second floor.

During the open house, SGMS families, faculty and staff, Board members and administrators all had the opportunity to check out the site, pick up a shovel and a hard hat and help move some dirt!

Guests in attendance included students, families, faculty and staff, Facility Committee members, current and former Board of Education members, building administrators, and current and retired district administrators — all of whom provided valuable feedback and support through the facilities planning and bond election process.

Representatives from the district’s architectural firm, KRJ Architects, were also in attendance. The design and construction process has been moving along smoothly and efficiently, and the district is grateful to both KRJ Architects and the district’s Construction Manager At-Risk, Brockmiller Construction, Inc., for their expertise, patience and dedication.

The four areas of focus encompassed within Prop SG are Early Childhood, safety and security, accessibility, and activities. The construction and renovations, once completed, will benefit not only our students and employees, but also our communities as a whole. The district would like to thank our community members for their support in order to make these facilities projects— and all of the opportunities that come with them— possible.
