Since welcoming its first patient in Chester in 2016, the program has grown steadily, completing 730 screenings over 10 years. This includes hundreds of baseline and annual follow-up exams, with an average of more than 70 patients screened each year, reflecting increasing awareness and trust within the community.
The program uses low-dose CT (LDCT) scans to detect lung cancer in its earliest stages, often before symptoms appear and when treatment is most effective. The screening itself takes just five minutes, requires no preparation, and results are typically available the next business day.
Over the past decade, the program has identified five lung cancer cases, several in early stages when outcomes are significantly improved; highlighting the importance of early detection. “This program is about making a real difference in people’s lives,” said Rhonda Mott, Chief Radiologic Technologist. “It’s quick, simple, and gives patients the opportunity to catch something early, when it matters most.”
Designed for individuals ages 50 to 77 with a history of smoking, the screenings are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Patients are guided through the process by a dedicated Nurse Navigator, ensuring a smooth and supportive experience.
For many, the screenings offer more than detection, they bring peace of mind. One patient shared that the program has become an important part of their annual health routine, providing reassurance and helping them stay proactive about their health and successfully quitting smoking for 3 years and counting.
Memorial Hospital encourages those who may qualify to speak with their provider about screening options. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 855-399-LUNG (5864).
