CHESTER – Memorial Hospital recently welcomed Caroline Arnold, a recent Millikin University graduate and aspiring physician, as part of the Illinois Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Rural Health Experience (RHE) Program. The program introduces healthcare students to the opportunities and rewards of practicing in rural communities.

Arnold participated in the three-day experience July 13-15, gaining firsthand exposure to a variety of healthcare careers and clinical departments throughout Memorial Hospital and its affiliated clinics.
During her visit, she shadowed healthcare professionals in areas including the Emergency Department, Operating Room, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation, Cardiopulmonary Services, Convenient Care, Specialty Clinic, and Chemotherapy & Infusion Services.
She also observed several physicians, including Dr. Bell, Dr. Orme, and Dr. Lowry.
A graduate of Millikin University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology Pre-Professional Studies, Arnold is currently working as a medical assistant while preparing to apply to medical school. Her goal is to become a primary care physician serving a rural community.
“During my time at Memorial Hospital, I learned how important physicians are to the rural community,” Arnold said. “I saw how providers build relationships with their patients and provide personalized care.”
Arnold also praised the Memorial Hospital team for making her experience meaningful. “Everyone was so helpful and kind,” she said. “Staff were happy to help me find different departments and were very accommodating in making sure I could see as much as possible during my visit.”
The Rural Health Experience Program allows students to explore healthcare careers while learning about the unique needs of rural communities. By partnering with AHEC, Memorial Hospital helps future healthcare professionals gain valuable insight into rural medicine and the important role rural hospitals play in patient care.
