SIKESTON, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Food Bank, Cape County Realtors and local title companies have joined forces to launch “Move to Feed,” a new program designed to reduce food waste and help neighbors facing hunger.
“Move to Feed” allows individuals who are moving to easily donate unopened, unexpired, non-perishable food by bringing it to a participating title company. Realtors will be able to provide information about the program to their clients.
“Realtors are dedicated to making their community a priority on a regular basis,” said Terry Baker, Association Executive, C2EX and member of Southeast Missouri REALTORS. “This partnership will allow our members to collectively work to fulfill a need in the community.”
According to Feeding America, 92 billion pounds of food goes to waste each year, with 145 billion meals’ worth of food going to landfills.
“We’re excited about ‘Move to Feed’ and think it will be a great opportunity for people to help their neighbors facing hunger,” said Sarah M. Garner, chief advancement officer with Southeast Missouri Food Bank. “When you’re moving, you often want to start fresh and so may end up throwing away perfectly good food. This program allows people to easily donate that food instead.”
Cape County Abstract & Title, Guardian Land Title, Main Street Title Company, Reliable Community Title and United Land Title will be the collection sites. Donated food will be regularly picked up by the food bank and distributed to the food bank’s partner agencies to help neighbors facing hunger.
Southeast Missouri Food Bank serves 80,000 individuals each month across it’s 16-county service area, which includes some of the highest rates of hunger in the state. For more information about the food bank and it’s programs, visit www.semofoodbank.org.
