CAPE GIRARDEAU – Working families across Cape Girardeau are facing mounting financial pressures this summer as historic childcare costs and inflation collide with the loss of school-year safety nets.
With center-based care in Missouri now averaging over $1,100 per month, the summer months pose a nearly impossible math problem for low- to moderate-income parents: spend an entire paycheck on seasonal supervision or risk employment by cutting working hours to stay home.
“Summer should not be a financial breaking point, but when school ends, families are instantly hit with high childcare bills and higher grocery costs,” said Heather Wall, Director of Parenting Services. “Through our statewide parenting program, case managers are deploying emergency assistance to ensure parents do not have to navigate this tough economic landscape alone.”
To help parents this summer, Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS) is opening its statewide safety net to keep local households stable:
- Parenting support and guidance. Local parenting education programs help moms and dads find ways to stretch a tight budget and connect them directly with regional emergency assistance programs.
- Meeting basic needs. Caseworkers are handing out essentials like diapers to take some of the immediate financial pressure off parents.
- Community support networks: Regional case managers work alongside stressed parents to connect them with critical local resources and coordinate immediate emergency assistance.
In tandem with economic relief, LFCS provides vital access to its behavioral health services. Financial stress and seasonal worries can quickly overwhelm a home, driving up anxiety for both parents and children. By offering accessible, affordable counseling, LFCS ensures that local families can talk through their worries and process the emotional burden before it strains the household.
“By blending our parenting resources with other wrap-around services, we are working to make sure the temporary pressures of summer do not turn into long-term crises for families,” said Wall.
To ensure that summer financial strain does not prevent a family from getting help, most LFCS programs are provided at low to no cost. Families seeking support can connect with LFCS at lfcsmo.org or by calling 866-326-LFCS.
