SIKESTON – The Missouri Department of Transportation has postponed the start of seal coat operations on Route A in Perry County.
It was originally set to begin June 1st, but now MoDOT says it will begin today.
This section of roadway is located from U.S. Route 61 near Uniontown, Missouri to County Road 447 near Wittenberg, Missouri.
Weather permitting, work will take place Wednesday, June 12 through Monday, June 17 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
MoDOT was also scheduled to apply the seal coat to Routes K and Route C. Both of these project were to have started Monday. The Route K work zone is from B Road to O Road. The Route C work zone is from A road to Route 61 near Pocahontas in Cape County.
Seal coats are a pavement repair process that is used by MoDOT on roads with lower traffic volumes to maximize available resources and extend the life of the roadway. Hot emulsion oil is sprayed onto the surface of the road, followed by finely ground rocks which are then compacted to adhere to the roadway. Excess material is swept off the surface, leaving an improved roadway that will hold up longer against the elements.
The method costs about one third the amount of a traditional asphalt overlay. The treatment keeps water from penetrating the surface, extends the life of the roadway up to seven years, and provides improved traction.
The work zones will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.
