The evening began at 5 p.m. with the CHS and AJ freshmen facing off for their first contests of 2023-24. The boys from Chester were strong most of the game and ended up with a convincing, 38-28, win.

The JV game was not quite as convincing as both teams fought long and hard right up until the final buzzer with Chester winning a close one, 51-50.

For the varsity game, the Wildcats led throughout the entire first half with the Jackets in close pursuit.

AJ came out with a quick 3-pointer just 30-seconds into the contest made by Evan Hall.  Both teams struggled during the next two minutes and were unable to score. Wildcat JJ Girardi broke the lull with a 3-pointer at the 4:50 mark and Drew Page hit a 3-pointer at 1:58 to end a 9-0 Wildcat run.

The table was set for a wild-and-crazy race to the finish to end the game. The first four minutes of the 4th quarter was a deadlock and neither team could score, and both defenses were playing hard.

Chester tied the game at 33-33 with 4:15 to play in the game. Coach Chris Toledo called a time out to plan the final four minutes of the game at the 2:27 mark. Chester then called a time out with to settle the boys down and instruct the final .51 of the game. Following the CHS time out, AJ committed back-to-back fouls with .30 and .24 to stop the clock and disrupt Chester’s game plan.

The Cats then called a time out to set up a play. At the .16 mark, AJ fouled again to stop the clock and attempt to get the ball back. Chester’s Kolton Jany went to the free throw line to attempt to give the Jackets some insurance points. Jany missed both shots giving the ball back to AJ for a final, nerve-racking possession.

With 7.4-seconds remaining in the game, AJ called two back-to-back time outs to attempt a better shot selection. When play resumed, the YellowJacket defense did not give a good shot and the Wildcats were unable to score to get the tie or win. Chester won, 36-35.
