CHS Boys’ win 2-of-3 at home quad match; place 4th at 2022 CIT

Andrews sets new PR & earns medalist honors at quad match; Mott finishes in top-5 at CIT

            The Chester High School Yellow Jacket Boys’ Golf Team had a great Week 3 winning 2-of-3 matches at home at their quadrangular match and finishing 4th in the nine-team 2022 Chester Invitational Tournament held at the Chester Country Club.

            At the quadrangular match Tuesday August 30 at the Chester Country Club the YellowJackets defeated Red Bud and New Athens, but fell by just four strokes to Okawville to improve to 12-9 for the season. In the process senior Clayton Andrews set a new personal-best record of 37 (+1) and earned medalist honors.

At the Annual Chester Invitational Tournament Thursday September 1, the Boys’ Squad finished 4th out of nine teams and senior Chance Mott finished in the top-5, tying for 3rd place out of 65 golfers, earning himself a plaque with his game of 76 strokes for the 18-hole event.

Quadrangular match at Chester 8-30-22

            Chester hosted a quadrangular match Tuesday August 30 at their home course at the Chester Country Club (CCC).  Joining the Yellow Jackets were the Okawville Rockets, the Red Bud Musketeers, and the New Athens Yellow Jackets.

Okawville edged the Chester YellowJackets by just four strokes, 159-163 to win the match.  The Chester boys then outplayed Red Bud 163-185 and New Athens 163 to 187 to improve to 12-9 for the early season.

It was a great day for Chester senior Clayton Andrews who led the field of competition shooting a 37 for the round of nine holes.  That score is just one stroke over par for the CCC.  That score was also a personal-best (PR) for Andrews who earned top honors of medalist for recording the best score out of all golfers.

Head Coach, Chris Toledo said, “Three other Jacket golfers set new PR’s as well!  Aidan Blechle, a senior, shot 43 (+7), sophomore Evan Dunning shot a 44 (+8), and sophomore Nick Coffey shot 64 (+28).”

Other YellowJacket scores include Chance Mott 40 (+4), Lucas Thompson 43 (+7), Gage Hasemeyer 43 (+7), Noah Homan 49 (13), and Max Blechle 64 (+28). Okawville, Chester, Red Bud and New Athens are all Cahokia Conference schools. Chester, Red Bud and Okawville are in the Illinois Division while New Athens is in the Kaskaskia Division.

2022 Chester Invitational Tournament (CIT) Thursday September 1

            Chester hosted its Annual Chester Invitational Tournament (CIT) for 2022 on Thursday September 1 at the Chester Country Club.  It was a nice warm, dry day with partly cloudy conditions keeping the extreme heat and humidity down.

            Nine teams came to the event this year including Chester, Steeleville, Trico, Sparta, Red Bud, Marissa, Murphysboro, Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher, and New Athens.

The Chester Country Club was a great host, providing liquid refreshments throughout the afternoon and a delicious taco-bar buffet to all golfers and coaches following completion of play.

The nine teams consisting of 54 golfers teed-off at 1:00 P.M. and the last golfers turned in their score cards at approximately 5:00 p.m.  It was a most enjoyable day for the 2022 CIT.

Adding to the pleasure of many local golfers and fans was the presence of former Chester High School teacher and coach, Brad Norman.  Norman is now teaching and coaching at Murphysboro High School and was on hand all day as the Head Golf Coach of the Red Devils.

For the second year-in-a-row the Steeleville Warriors were the winners of the Annual CIT.  The Warriors won with a top score of 305 strokes, followed by Trico (2nd, 329), Sparta (3rd, 330), Chester (4th, 332), Red Bud (5th, 354), Marissa (6th, 363), Murphysboro (7th, 364); Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher (8th, 377), and New Athens (9th, 378).

Steeleville earned the top award, a 2022 CIT Championship trophy for its top finish in the field of nine teams.  The top-5 golfers also earned plaques for their respective individual accomplishments.
