Perry County deputy hurt while attempting to stop fleeing vehicle

PERRYVILLE — A Perry County Sheriff’s Deputy was hurt late Wednesday night while attempting to deploy a spike strip on I-55 to halt a fleeing suspect.

Perry County Sheriff Gary Schaaf says the deputy suffered a hand injury when the cord attached to the spike strip became wrapped around his hand as a passing vehicle drove over it at the 129 mile marker around 11:12 p.m.

Unfortunately, the vehicle which ran over the spike strip was not the one being pursued.

Sheriff Schaaf did not identify the injured deputy.

He said the chase began on the southbound I-55 in Ste. Genevieve County at about the 150 mile marker and his deputies responded at the request of the Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s office.

The chase involved a red Dodge Charger at speeds of up to 120 miles an hour.

The pursued vehicle was eventually stopped in Cape Girardeau County.
