STE. GENEVIEVE—On November 4th, Nicole Moonier and Greg Gettinger from Citizen’s Electric presented a workshop for Ste. Genevieve 4-H members.
The workshop focused on safety around electricity, what to do when there are downed power lines and employment descriptions.
They provided a life-like model to demonstrate the dangers of electricity and how to remain safe.
The 4-H members were able to view the lineman’s equipment and a description of his day-to-day job responsibilities.
The members appreciated Moonier and Gettinger’s time and expertise.
The display was set up as a scale model of a substation, house, street and overhead power lines.
The 4-H members were shown what can happen when objects touch a power line.
Moonier and Gettinger also explained when and how to exit a car in the event a power line is in contact with it.
Another point made was that objects that come in contact with the lines, even seemingly harmless objects like mylar balloons can cause extreme heat; this can cause the lines to melt, resulting in loss of electric power to homes and businesses.
Programs like this help 4-H members gain an understanding of personal safety. They also help members develop have a better knowledge of their community and local career opportunites.
