Wealthy donors desperate for anti-abortion ‘win’

MISSOURI, STATEWIDE– Late Wednesday night, May 6th, 2026, The Missouri Senate Third Read and passed SB 999, a tricky abortion ban that politicians call the “born alive abortion” bill.

A news release from Abortion Action Missouri states “drafted by anti-abortion lobbyists across the country, medical professionals refer to these types of bills as TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) Laws because they are designed to restrict and ultimately ban abortion care in effect, although not explicitly stated in the text.”

The bill goes back to the Missouri House for a final vote expected next week.

Statement from Mallory Schwarz, AAM executive director: “This last minute scramble by anti-abortion politicians to get themselves a ‘win’ right as the Missouri Legislative Session comes to a close makes clear that they know they are about to lose their abortion bans at the ballot box—again. No matter how blatantly unconstitutional and medically nonsensical a policy is, somebody’s wealthy donors were desperate for a ‘win.’

SB 999 is just another drop in the bucket of the long-term strategy to ban and criminalize all abortion care. These politicians might have more votes in the capitol building, but we the people have more votes at the ballot box. This is the Show Me State––and just like we did before, voters will show where we stand on banning abortion by voting No on 3 in 2026.”
