SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Senator Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) released the following statement condemning the Governor’s controversial decision to sign Senate Bill 1950:
“Governor Pritzker’s decision to sign physician-assisted suicide into law is profoundly disappointing and dangerous.
“As someone with strong Christian beliefs, I believe every life has value and purpose. This new law abandons that principle by creating a system with virtually no real safeguards. It allows lethal medication to be taken with no witness present, provides almost no oversight, and leaves some of our state’s most vulnerable susceptible to coercion or pressure.
“This is not compassion. True compassion means providing care, support, and comfort, not steering people toward an irreversible decision made in isolation. Illinois should strengthen resources for hospice, palliative care, and mental health, not create policies that make vulnerable people feel like they are a burden.
“The Governor’s choice will have lasting consequences for our state. I will continue to stand with the advocates, caregivers, and faith communities who believe Illinois should protect life, safeguard the vulnerable, and ensure that every person facing a terminal diagnosis has access to hope and care.”
