ST. LOUIS – As we raise our glasses to toast June Dairy Month, there’s no better way to celebrate than by enjoying a cold, refreshing glass of milk. Whether added to morning coffee or enjoyed straight from the glass, fluid milk is a staple in many homes — and for good reason.
“There are a variety of milk options at the store, but no matter what type of milk or brand, it’s packed with 13 essential nutrients that promote health and wellness,” said Jessica Kassel, registered dietitian with St. Louis District Dairy Council.
From conventional to ultrapasteurized milk, shelf-stable varieties and lactose-free options, there’s a type of milk to suit every preference and dietary need. Let’s look at the different kinds of milk that can be poured into a daily routine.
Conventional Milk
This milk is packaged in traditional gallon or half-gallon containers that feature various colored caps. Like all milk, it is a rich source of calcium, protein, and numerous vitamins and minerals. Available in whole, 2%, 1%, and skim varieties, conventional milk can complement any lifestyle or taste preference.
Ultrapasteurized Milk
Looking for a longer shelf life without sacrificing nutritional quality? Ultrapasteurized milk is a great option. This milk is heated to a higher temperature for a shorter time, which allows for a longer expiration date than conventional milk. This choice is perfect for stocking up for those who make infrequent trips to the grocery store.
Lactose-Free Milk
For those with lactose intolerance, lactose-free milk is a perfect choice. By adding lactase enzyme to the milk, the lactose is broken down into simpler sugars, making it easier to digest. Lactose-free milk is real milk without the digestive discomfort that can come with lactose.
Shelf-Stable Milk
Shelf-stable milk is fresh milk that is pasteurized at an ultra-high temperature and packaged into a special container that allows it to be stored without refrigeration. Ideal for those looking for convenience, shelf-stable milk can be stored in the pantry and ensures milk is always on hand. No matter the type selected, each variety of milk is a powerhouse of nutrition and a delicious way to provide the body with essential nutrients.
This June Dairy Month, raise a glass of milk — the beverage that’s been nourishing families for generations and continues to pour out health benefits in every glass!
