Perry County opens bids for sidewalk and hears report from the sheriff

PERRYVILLE – The Perry County Commission opened bids for a sidewalk at the Perry County Joint Justice Center and heard a report from Sheriff Jason Klaus at its July 17th meeting.

 

According to the minutes of the meeting:

 

Lappe Cement Finishing, Inc. was the apparent low bidder at $132,212.50 with alternate A and $130,142.50 with alternate B.

 

There were a total of five bids:

 

Kluesner Construction, Inc. $152,688.04 with alternate A and $149,810.74 with alternate B.

 

Fronabarger Concreters, Inc. $154,865.90 with alternate A and $157,556.90 with alternate B.

 

Putz Construction, LLC $186,298.75 with alternate A and $186,402.25 with Alternate B.

 

Mike Light Cement Finishing Inc. $208,060.00 with alternate A and  $202,885.00 with alternate B.

 

The Engineer’s Estimate was $178,104.40 with alternate A and $160,095.40 with alternater B.

 

No action was taken by the commissioners on the bids at the July 17th meeting.

 

In other business at the meeting:

 

Sheriff Jason Klaus reported he would be losing a member of his jail staff who is taking a new job with the Perryville Police Department. The sheriff also advised commissioners that he will be replacing two vehicles on the force’s fleet through the Enterprise program. He said the office sold two unmarked vehicles on Purple Wave. Sheriff Klaus said Enterprise would like to meet with the commissioners and other county officeholders utilizing a vehicle fleet on August 7th. 

 

Sheriff Klaus said issues with the county jail’s HVAC and locking mechanisms are being addressed.

 

The sheriff noted the county’s Blue Shield distinction give his office the opportunit to access $50,000 in grant funding. He anticipates that will be used for training purposes and administrative equipment purchases. 

 

The Sheriff noted a pending lawsuit against Perry County for a slip and fall in the previous jail has been settled out of court through mediation.

 

The Sheriff inquired on discrepancies in budget numbers for his department in two categories. He has repeatedly asked for clarification from the Clerk’s office and has received no additional information. Monthly reporting shows a different dollar amount than what the commission approved. The Commission said it would investigate.

 

The Sheriff requested that a smoking receptacle be placed outside the Perry County Joint Justice Center as the parking lot becomes littered with cigarette butts. It was also discussed that a bike rack needs to be installed at the justice center.

 

Sheriff Klaus announced that a motorcycle ride to benefit BackStoppers would be congregating at the Missouri National Veteran’s Memorial on September 28.
