OSFM and ISP Celebrate and Honor Illinois Telecommunicators for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

In 2025, ISP telecommunicators handled approximately 650,000 calls for service.

SPRINGFIELD – The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and Illinois State Police (ISP) are joining together to celebrate and honor all Illinois telecommunicators. April 12–18, 2026 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week recognizing the dedicated professionals who answer the call, calm the chaos, and help guide first responders when every second counts.

“Telecommunicators are the calm, steady voice in moments of crisis. Their professionalism, training, and dedication ensure that help is sent quickly and efficiently when seconds matter most,” said Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow. “During National Telecommunicators Week, we proudly recognize their vital role in protecting the residents of Illinois and supporting our first responders.”

ISP’s Telecommunication Services Bureau (TSB) operates six communications centers through Illinois with approximately 115 public safety telecommunicators responsible for providing reliable routine and emergency communication capabilities for state law enforcement agencies, as well as federal, county, and municipal agency partners when necessary.  Last year, ISP telecommunicators handled approximately 650,000 calls for service.

“Telecommunicators are the first link in the chain of emergency response, a link that must never break,” said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly.  “ISP Telecommunicators are also guardian angels to our officers, constantly watching over them to know where they are, when they need help, and how to keep them safe. Thank you to all telecommunicators who bring calm to chaos and help when it is needed most.”

Every year, the second week of April is set aside to honor our telecommunicators who are truly the first calming and helpful voice some hear in a time of need. This week-long event, initially set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public.
