JEFFERSON CITY – New World screwworm is a devastating pest spreading through Central America and now confirmed in Mexico.
This pest burrows into living tissue, causing severe—and sometimes deadly—damage to animals, including livestock and pets.
What to watch for:
- Irritated behavior
- Head shaking
- The smell of decay
- Presence of fly larvae (maggots) in wounds
Prevent the spread:
- Inspect pets & livestock
- Stay alert when traveling
- Check vehicles coming from infested areas
Treatment involves sterile insect techniques and veterinary care.
In an effort to prevent the spread of New World screwworm, USDA has suspended live cattle, horse and bison imports through U.S. southern border ports of entry.
