ST. LOUIS, MO — New American Red Cross data released today shows a snapshot of multigenerational volunteerism here in Missouri.
From Gen Z to the Silent Generation, people of all ages comprise the over 1,300 volunteers for the Red Cross of Greater St. Louis. According to demographic estimates shared by most Red Cross volunteers in Missouri:
- Gen Z (born between 1997-2012) is the fastest-growing and largest group of volunteers (29.72%), driven largely by growth in student-led Red Cross clubs.
- Baby Boomers (born between 1946-1964) account for roughly a quarter of volunteers (29.16%), followed by Millennials (born between 1981-1996) (26.37%) and Gen X (born between 1965-1980) (9.43%) to anchor core mission roles.
- The Silent Generation (born between 1928-1945) is the smallest cohort (1.22%) but contributes a legacy of service that often spans multiple decades.
“Generation after generation, our community has shown that compassion is one of its greatest strengths,” said LaKricia Cox, Executive Director, Red Cross of Greater St. Louis. “In moments when help can’t wait, volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to offer care, comfort and hope. Their commitment reflects a shared humanitarian spirit that connects us across time and continues to make a meaningful difference through our lifesaving mission — one that has supported families for more than half of our country’s 250-year history.”
This month during Red Cross Month, the Red Cross honors how people today deliver support when help can’t wait. Every contribution matters — visit redcross.org to get involved by volunteering, making a financial donation, giving blood or taking a class in lifesaving skills.
Red Cross Month
Red Cross Month celebrates and honors people who deliver support to those who can’t wait. Giving blood can save more than one life with a single donation. Taking a CPR class teaches you how to triple a person’s odds of surviving a cardiac arrest. Lending your time and talent prevents and alleviates suffering in the face of emergencies. Donating a gift of any size helps volunteers provide immediate relief and hope.
Red Cross Giving Day
This year’s Red Cross Month culminates with Red Cross Giving Day on March 25 to bring together 30,000 supporters to help ensure families don’t face disaster alone. Your donations provide emergency shelter, food, comfort, relief supplies, and financial assistance for people in need. A gift of any size makes a difference. For example, a donation of $20 provides a day of meals for someone devastated by a disaster. Donate and learn more at redcross.org/GivingDay
