Feeding Missouri Encourages Communities to Start the Conversation About Hunger
Columbia, Mo., September 1, 2026 – September marks Hunger Action Month, a
nationwide awareness campaign dedicated to increasing awareness around hunger and
food insecurity while encouraging communities to take action and support their neighbors
who may be facing food insecurity.
Throughout the month, Feeding Missouri and Missouri’s six regional food banks will share
stories, educational resources, and opportunities for Missourians to learn more about food
insecurity and help their neighbors.
According to Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap study, nearly 1 million
Missourians experience food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next
meal will come from or have consistent access to nutritious food. Hunger affects neighbors
in every region of our state.
“Food insecurity exists in every Missouri community,” said Leigh Anne Haun, executive
director of Feeding Missouri. “Hunger Action Month provides an opportunity to learn more,
challenge assumptions, and have important conversations about how we support our
neighbors.”
Feeding Missouri’s network of six regional food banks serves all 114 counties and the City
of St. Louis through partnerships with food pantries, meal programs, schools, shelters, and
community organizations. Together, these organizations work every day to connect people
with food and additional resources when they need them most.
One of the simplest ways Missourians can participate in Hunger Action Month is by
learning more about hunger in their communities and helping start conversations about
food insecurity.
“We want this month to be about understanding,” Haun said. “Just honest conversations
about food insecurity and how communities can work together to address it.”

Throughout September, Feeding Missouri will spotlight food bank initiatives, innovative
hunger-relief programs, and opportunities to take action through volunteering, donating,
and raising awareness.
