CHESTER – Memorial Hospital recently hosted its 3-day Junior Explorers Camp, welcoming nine students entering grades 6 through 8 for an engaging, hands-on introduction to healthcare careers.

Throughout the camp, participants explored 13 different professions and received valuable training in first aid, CPR, AED use, and choking rescue. Students toured and interacted with several hospital departments, including the lab, nursing, cardiac pulmonary rehabilitation, pharmacy, cardiopulmonary, diagnostic imaging, dentistry, occupational therapy, surgical department, specialty clinic, dietary services, speech pathology, and AirEvac.
Activities ranged from practicing patient transfers with a Hoyer lift and participating in an Autopulse demonstration to building X-ray images, properly putting on personal protective equipment, and learning adaptive tools used in therapy.
While weather prevented an AirEvac helicopter landing, students still gained insight through an in-depth discussion about emergency air transport. Medical Explorers assisted throughout the camp, helping guide students as they actively participated, asked thoughtful questions, and explored potential career paths.
By the end of the week, each student had identified multiple healthcare careers that sparked their interest.
Memorial Hospital will continue its youth education programming this summer by offering two Child and Babysitting Safety classes on June 25 and July 23.
