JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri state parks and historic sites invite visitors to kick off summer and make lasting memories outdoors this Memorial Day weekend. Whether enjoying the lake, hitting the trails, relaxing or cooking out with friends, guests are encouraged to make safety part of every adventure.
Come prepared with these seasonal safety reminders:
Sunshine and warm weather ahead.
Dress for the weather and apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen before heading outdoors. Even short periods in the sun can lead to overexposure.
Make water safety part of the fun.
Whether you’re visiting a lake or river, water conditions can change quickly. Follow these water safety tips:
- Wear a properly fitting personal flotation device.
- Swim only in designated areas.
- Familiarize yourself with the area first before entering the water.
- Watch for underwater obstacles (stumps, logs, etc.).
- Drinking alcoholic beverages and swimming do not mix.
Plan for a better outdoor experience.
Simple precautions can make all the difference during your visit to Missouri state parks and historic sites.
- Stay hydrated and opt for snacks that have high-water content, such as watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes and cucumbers.
- Protect yourself from ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes by wearing insect repellent and appropriate clothing.
- “When thunder roars, go indoors!” Remember the 30-30 rule. Once you see lightning, count to 30. If you hear thunder before you hit 30, go inside. Have a weather radio on hand and know where the safe places are located within the park and take shelter, if needed or directed.
