ST. LOUIS, MO. – With summer in full swing, many parents face unique challenges in balancing work, childcare, and family well-being, as they navigate the absence of the familiar school-year routine.
“While eagerly anticipated by most children, the summer break can be a stressor for parents as they juggle new childcare arrangements, manage screen time, and keep kids engaged,” said Heather Wall, Director of Parenting Services for Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS). “Parents need actionable strategies to maintain their well-being and create a positive environment for their children throughout these months.”
To support families in navigating these demands and prevent parental burnout, LFCS provides this Summer Survival Checklist for Parents.
√ Establish flexible routines. While strict school schedules are out, predictable rhythms can reduce chaos. Plan loose blocks for activities, quiet time, meals, and chores to create a sense of structure without rigidity.
√ Set clear screen time boundaries. With more free time, digital device usage can easily spiral. Work with children to establish clear and consistent limits on screen time.
√ Create a summer bucket list with kids. Involve your children in brainstorming fun activities they want to do over the summer. This list can be a valuable resource for combating boredom and creating memorable experiences.
√ Plan a quiet time each day. Designate a specific period each day for quiet, independent activities, such as reading, listening to audiobooks, or working on puzzles.
√ Have a “no plans” day each week to recharge. Dedicate one day each week to spontaneous activities or simply relaxing time at home without an agenda.
√ Encourage frequent water breaks. With increased play and warmer temperatures, ensuring consistent hydration is vital.
√ Schedule kid-free breaks. Prioritize and actively schedule time for yourself, whether it’s through a partner swap, relying on grandparents, or arranging for a babysitter.
√ Say yes to simple fun. Embrace the easy, spontaneous joys of summer, such as running through sprinklers, impromptu movie nights, or enjoying popsicles.
√ Give yourself grace. Release the pressure to have a perfectly curated summer. Acknowledge that parenting has its challenges and focus on connection and well-being over idealized expectations.
