PARK HILLS – Mineral Area College (MAC) is excited to announce that James Whaley, automotive technology instructor, has achieved the prestigious designation of ASE World Class Technician. Awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the Auto Care Association, this honor identifies Whaley as one of the most highly skilled automotive professionals in the industry today.

The path to becoming a World Class Technician is an extraordinary challenge that requires a technician to earn and maintain 22 specific ASE certifications. This rigorous testing covers a vast spectrum of the industry, including automotive, collision repair, medium and heavy truck systems, and advanced engine performance.
Whaley’s achievement is incredibly rare. While approximately 250,000 technicians are ASE Certified, only about 2,000 driven professionals have earned World Class Recognition since the program was established more than 35 years ago. Typically, fewer than 50 technicians reach this status annually, placing Whaley among an elite group of the industry’s top experts.
“James’s achievement brings an incredible level of distinction to our MAC Tech Automotive Technology program,” said MAC President Dr. Joe Gilgour. “By reaching a milestone that only a handful of technicians hit each year, he is demonstrating to our students that there is no limit to professional growth in the automotive trades. We are honored to have a World Class Technician leading our program.”
For students at MAC Tech, Whaley’s certification ensures they are learning from an instructor well-versed in the highest industry standards. His mastery of evolving vehicle technologies and complex diagnostic procedures directly translates into a more robust, modern curriculum for the next generation of technicians.
Whaley’s name will be permanently entered into the ASE World Class Technician roster, marking a career pinnacle that few in the field ever reach.
