Friess Frame

By Illinois State Representative David Friess

RED BUD, Illinois – As we move through a busy season here in the 115th District, I’m reminded every day what an honor it is to serve as your State Representative! Whether it’s connecting with constituents at local events, tackling critical issues in Springfield, or working directly with community leaders, my focus remains the same: fighting for our shared values and delivering results that make a real difference.

In this edition of our newsletter, I’ll be sharing updates on recent district events, highlighting important legislative developments, and offering a look ahead at the work still to be done. From public safety to fiscal responsibility, my team and I are committed to keeping you informed and engaged throughout the entire process.

Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve been working on—both here at home and at the Capitol!

Restoring Illinois Ethics

Illinois has long been plagued by political corruption, and recent events only highlight the need for serious reform. Former House Speaker Mike Madigan was convicted earlier this year on charges of bribery, wire fraud, and racketeering in connection with a pay-to-play scheme involving Commonwealth Edison.

Despite the gravity of this conviction, Democrat leadership in Springfield has been largely silent. That’s why House Republicans are continuing to push for real, meaningful ethics reform. Proposals include stricter financial disclosure laws, a ban on lawmakers becoming lobbyists immediately after leaving office, and a prohibition on using campaign funds for legal defense—something Madigan did while under federal investigation.

We’ve introduced the strong reforms we need to begin turning around our state’s reputation for corruption. Former Speaker Mike Madigan has been sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison following his convictions for corruption.  How many more indictments and convictions will it take for Democrats to stop playing partisan games and start working with us to solve these serious problems we’re facing?

Illinoisans deserve a government they can trust. It’s time to hold corrupt politicians accountable and restore integrity to Springfield.

District Wide Shred Events

Over the past several weeks, my office has hosted a series of free, district-wide Shred Events to help residents securely dispose of sensitive documents. From bank statements to medical records, we know how important it is to protect your personal information and guard against identity theft, and we were proud to offer this service to the community!

We were thrilled by the strong turnout at each location. Dozens of cars lined up at every stop, and our team, along with dedicated volunteers and community partners, worked hard to ensure things ran smoothly.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, helped spread the word, or volunteered their time! We look forward to offering more shred events in the future, along with additional community outreach efforts. As always, if there’s ever a way our office can assist you, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Democrats Eyeing Delivery Tax

Once again, Democrats attempt to shove more taxes down the throats of Illinois Taxpayers. A bill that included a proposed $1.50 “delivery tax” on retail orders was passed by the Senate but ultimately stalled in the House during the spring legislative session. The measure, buried in HB 3438, aimed to help address Chicago’s $770 million Regional Transit Authority deficit, but at the expense of consumers, small businesses, and delivery services statewide.

The so-called “Retail Delivery Climate Impact Fee” would apply to nearly all online deliveries, with 80% of funds allocated to Chicago-area transit and just 20% to downstate. Opposition was strong from major delivery platforms and small business advocates, who warned of its impact on vulnerable populations such as seniors.

While the tax didn’t make it into law this session, the fight isn’t over. With a looming transit crisis in Chicago, lawmakers may revisit the plan during the Veto Session or in a possible Special Session. Rest assured, I will remain committed to ensuring your taxes aren’t raised!

Connecting Over Coffee & Danish

To stay connected with constituents and hear directly from the people we serve, our office has been hosting Coffee Talks throughout the district. These gatherings are a great way to sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and have real conversations about the issues that matter most to you, whether it’s taxes, public safety, education, or anything in between.

We’ve had strong turnout at every stop so far, and I’m grateful to everyone who has taken the time to share their thoughts and concerns. These discussions help shape the work I do in Springfield and ensure that your voices are heard loud and clear.

Stay tuned for upcoming Coffee Talk dates and locations! We’re working to visit every corner of the district. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Hosting Annual Senior Fair

Senator Bryant and I were proud to host a Senior Fair, connecting older residents in our district with valuable resources, services, and information, all in one convenient place. From healthcare providers and veterans’ services to utility assistance and fraud prevention, this event brought together over 40 vendors dedicated to supporting our senior community.

The turnout was fantastic, and it was great to see so many familiar faces taking advantage of the free information, screenings, and giveaways. Events like these are a key part of our commitment to ensuring seniors in our district feel supported, informed, and appreciated.

Thank you to all the vendors, volunteers, and attendees who helped make the fair a success. We look forward to hosting more in the future!

Moving Forward

As we look ahead, I remain committed to standing up for the values that matter most to our district, fiscal responsibility, individual freedoms, safer communities, and greater government transparency. While we’ve made progress on several important fronts, there’s still much work to be done.

I will continue to fight for commonsense policies in Springfield, push back against burdensome tax hikes, and ensure that the voices of Southern Illinois families are heard loud and clear. Whether it’s through legislation, district events, or simply listening to your concerns, I’m here to serve YOU!
