Consumer Expenditures for the St. Louis Metropolitan Area

KANSAS CITY – The Mountain-Plains Information Office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics today released Consumer Expenditures for the St. Louis Metropolitan Area: 2023-24.

 

The release provides annual household expenditures, percentage shares, and selected demographic characteristics for households in the St. Louis area for the period 2023-24.

 

Acting Regional Commissioner Jerome Watters noted the following:

 

  1. Households in the St. Louis, MO-IL, metropolitan area spent an average of $77,694 per year in 2023-24.

 

  1. Housing was the largest expenditure component for St. Louis-area households and averaged $22,577. Housing accounted for 29.1% of the area’s household budget, compared to the 33.2% U.S. average. (See chart 1.)

 

  1. The portion of a St. Louis household’s budget spent on food, 13.8%, compared to the 12.9% U.S. average.

 

  1. Expenditures in St. Louis for personal insurance and pensions, at 14.2%, compared to the U.S. average of 12.4%. Among the 22 metropolitan areas, personal insurance and pensions expenditure shares ranged from 15.4% in San Francisco to 10.4% in Phoenix.
