Civil War Decoration Day Ceremony slated

STE. GENEVIEVE – The St. James Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold a traditional Decoration Day ceremony on Saturday May 30th from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm in Memorial Cemetery, 35N. 5th Street.

Decoration Day was established in 1868 by the Grand Army of the Republic veteran’s organization and is considered as the beginning of what would become Memorial Day. The purpose of Decoration Day was to honor those Union servicemen who died serving in the Civil War.

The May 30th event will include honoring the names of fifty-one Ste. Genevieve countians who died while serving the Union. Many of those listed are buried in cemeteries in other Missouri counties and states.

As such, they are not usually remembered as having been from our county. The camp invites the public to this free event, especially those that are descendants of those listed below. Join us as we honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to save the Union.
