A funeral will be held Monday, September 29, 2025 for 58-year-old Carl Edward Roth of Pittsburg, Kansas who passed away unexpectedly Monday, September 22, 2025, at his home.
Carl was born August 1, 1967, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., the son of Paul “Rocky” and Carol (Buatte) Roth who both preceded him in death.
He married Megan Saia of Frontenac on July 3, 2010, in Pittsburg. She survives.
He is also survived by twin sons: Ty Vincent and Jax Paul, who will turn 12 on Feb. 26, 2026; brothers: Paul (Annette) Roth Jr. of Ste. Genevieve, Mo.; Dennis (Cheri) Roth of Chester, Ill.; and Michael “Ozzie” (Laura) Roth of Saint Peters, Mo.; a sister Marsha (Tom) Wortham of Saint Peters, Mo.; and several nephews and nieces.
He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Vince Saia; and his close friend, Tommy Riggs.
He grew up in Ste. Genevieve and attended Valle Catholic High School where he helped the Warriors capture the first three of their record 14 Missouri Class 1A state football championships from 1981-83.
Carl played football at the University of Kansas as a freshman in 1985, before transferring to the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science & Technology).
He was a four-year letterman, and two-year starter at inside linebacker, for the Miners from 1987-91.
Carl joined the Pittsburg State University football coaching staff as a student assistant under former head coach Chuck Broyles in 1992.
He completed his undergraduate degree in physical education at PSU in the spring of 1993; and he earned his master’s degree in physical education from Pittsburg State in the spring of 1995.
Roth served on the Gorillas football coaching staff under Coach Broyles from 1992-2009 and Coach Tim Beck from 2010-2019, helping the Gorillas capture the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship and post National Runner-Up finishes in 1992, 1995 and 2004.
He helped guide Pitt State to 15 appearances in the NCAA Division II national playoffs, capture nine Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles and compile 255 victories during his distinguished 28-year career with the Gorillas.
For the past three years, Carl has served as an assistant football coach and a permanent substitute teacher at St. Mary’s-Colgan High School in Pittsburg.
Carl was a devoted husband and father who cherished every moment with his family, which included countless hours coaching, refereeing and playing sports with his sons, and all the neighborhood children who joined them, as well as many other outdoor activities like family fishing trips to Grandpa Vince’s pond.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2025 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg.
A funeral for 58-year-old Carl Edward Roth of Pittsburg, Kansas will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sseptember 29, 2025 at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts on the Pittsburg State University campus. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service at the Bicknell center.
Donations can be made to the “Carl Roth Memorial Fund” and the family plans to create a football scholarship for future St. Mary’s-Colgan High School graduates.
