By State Senator Mike Henderson
We’re back from spring break — refreshed, focused and continuing to advance meaningful legislation here at the Capitol. There’s a real sense of momentum in these final weeks of session as we prepare to dig into the state budget and work to deliver results for the people of our state before adjournment on May 15.
This is a challenging year, and there are some tough decisions ahead. I want to be very clear about my priorities — I do not support cutting funding for seniors, people with disabilities or organizations that serve disadvantaged children. As we review the budget, I will continue to stand up for our most vulnerable, working to ensure these critical services are protected.
On the Senate floor, my 7-OH bill, Senate Bill 1605, sparked a lively and thoughtful debate, lasting more than an hour and drawing some opposition. The issue is getting a lot of attention — Missouri’s attorney general recently held a press conference announcing a lawsuit against American Shaman and related companies over the production of 7-OH products. These developments show just how seriously we are taking the regulation of these products and the safety of the public.
Senate Bill 1607, known as the SLAPP bill, also moved forward this week. This legislation protects people from lawsuits that aren’t really about winning in court, but intimidating or silencing opponents who speak out. A “SLAPP” lawsuit (strategic lawsuit against public participation) can be costly and time-consuming, even when the defendant wins. This bill helps ensure that Missourians can exercise their free speech without fear of being buried under expensive, frivolous legal battles.
Meanwhile, Senate Bill 903 recognizes that our critical infrastructure has evolved. Running water and electricity have always been essential, but today, reliable internet and phone service are just as important. This bill updates state law to protect these services from criminals who damage communication lines, helping keep people connected when they need it most. It passed the Senate and has moved to the House for consideration.
This time of year is also special for many families. From my family to yours, I wish you a joyful Easter filled with smiles, laughter and some cherished time together.
