Public masses at Shrine Church in Perryville are suspended due to COVID-19 surge

PERRYVILLE — Rising COVID-19 numbers mean no more public masses until further notice at the National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Perryville.

The Association of the Miraculous Medal made the announcement Saturday afternoon.

The suspension of public masses began Sunday, December 26th.

The Superior of St. Mary’s of the Barrens Church said the suspension of public masses is designed to protect the priests and brothers who already have health issues from the from the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Health experts expect the number of COVID-19 cases will surge over the next few weeks in Missouri.

The Shrine Church remains open for visitors to come and pray, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Sunday

The official said public masses will resume when the risk of infection is lessened for the elderly priests and brothers living at St. Mary’s of the Barrens.

“We pray that the Lady of the Mirculous Medal brings comfort to those currently suffering from COVID-19,” the Superior stated.
