Why is attendance important?
Low attendance is not the “cause” of a lower probability of graduating from high school, however, “improving attendance” has the potential to improve high school graduation rates.
CHS School counselor, Beth Gibbs, created a poster to get the message out about the importance of having good attendance. Here are some of the key points to her poster.
Showing up for school matters for “R.E.A.L.”
Being at school regularly is an opportunity to build Routines.
Being at school regularly helps to increase Engagement.
Being at school regularly provides Access to resources.
Being at school regularly provides support for Learning.
Ms. Gibbs noted that students who are chronically absent experience the following negative factors:
Are more likely to “struggle academically!”
Are more likely to “drop out!”
Are more likely to “be held back!”
Are more likely to “get into trouble with the law!”
What are some good habits that can be developed to improve attendance?
Make school part of daily family life! Set routines that can be adhered to every day. Set times for waking up, doing homework, and going to bed. Talk about what happened at school every day.
Keep in touch with your school! Stay in touch with teachers and let them know if you need to miss school. Keep the school up-to-date regarding your current address and phone number.
Have a back-up plan! Connect with others so that you have someone that you can reach out to for help with such issues like getting a ride to school.
Know your stuff! Know your school’s attendance policy and what lessons are being taught in your classrooms.
Plan for the year! Schedule family vacations, medical and dental appointments during school breaks or on weekends when possible.
Work together! If you have to be absent from school, communicate with your teachers about how you can access make-up work.
Assistant Principal, Robin Barton, said, “Attendance is important! We want all of our students to be here so we can help prepare them for their futures. We are committed to improving attendance by meeting student and family needs and by partnering with our local Regional Office of Education.”
Principal Jeremy Blechle said, “Today’s pizza party was for all 103 of our students who had perfect attendance in September. That is especially pertinent because September was “Attendance Awareness Month” across the nation.”
“Today we fed all 103 students who achieved perfect attendance with FREE pizza and beverages at a special luncheon ahead of all of the other lunch periods. We hope to continue to reward perfect attendance with other perks throughout the school year!”
