SGCMH welcomes new family medicine doctor

STE. GENEVIEVE — The Medical Staff of Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) welcomes Dr. Sarah Bohnert, family medicine physician to its team. Dr. Bohnert is practicing at the Bloomsdale Medical Centre.

She attended University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri, where she also received her residency training.

Dr. Bohnert said she was already familiar with SGCMH prior to her employment.

“After my first year of medical school, I did a rural track rotation which led me to Ste. Genevieve.  While I was here, I trained with Dr. Ritter and then with Dr. Bird. I really enjoyed it here.”  Later on, she did a six month rotation in Joplin, Missouri with a family physician and really got immersed in family medicine.

“I learned so much and fell in love with the options that family medicine offers and the variety of patients you get to see.”

Dr. Bohnert said she set out to be in the field of biomedical engineering, in which she earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

“It wasn’t until the end of my sophomore year of undergrad that I fully made the switch to medicine,” she explained. I couldn’t find anything I really loved. Some of my colleagues were going into medicine and I found my path. I had never previously thought of going into medicine before.”

Originally from St. Charles, Missouri, Dr. Bohnert knew she wanted to stay in Missouri to practice medicine, and developed an interest in rural medicine in particular.

“Ever since I started in this field, I didn’t have any desire to practice in a large city,” she said. “I just like the idea of a smaller community where you really get to know your patients and become connected to the community. In a big city you tend to get lost in all the noise.”

Dr. Bohnert felt from the start that SGCMH was an organization where she would feel comfortable working.

“I feel the atmosphere is very patient-centered and they really care for their physicians as well,” she said. “The administration and staff have been very helpful. I get the impression that the hospital is interested in more than just numbers.”

Dr. Bohnert said she enjoys all aspects of family medicine but has a special interest in geriatric care.

She and her husband, a Navy veteran who is also in the medical field working as a nurse, have made their home in Ste. Genevieve.

They have a busy life, with three daughters, ages 5 months, 3-years-old, and 16-years-old.
