Weldon Lee Runnels, fondly known as “Cutter” during his youth, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2023, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
He was born on March 11, 1927, in Scopus, Mo., to the late George Edward and Iva Elzora (Mungle) Runnels.
Weldon found his soul mate and was married to Fern Catherine Slinkard on November 25, 1948, in Jackson, Mo. Their love endured the test of time, she survives him in Jackson.
Together, they built a beautiful family, raising a son: Vurnis Lee (Diane) Runnels of St. Peters, Mo, and a daughter: Olive Lucille (Charles) Humes of Jackson, Mo.
He is also survived by two sisters: Beatrice Slinkard of Kansas and Sylvia Maxine Davis of Perryville, Mo.; three granddaughters: Amy (Bill) Voelkel, Tisha (Gary) Hecht, and Cara (Brent) Griffith; as well as his six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lender Runnels.
Weldon served his country with distinction, being a veteran of both the United States Navy and Army.
He bravely fought in World War II and the Korean War, earning an “Occupational Medal” in Japan.
After his service, Weldon became a truck driver, a role he cherished throughout his life.
Weldon’s passion for life extended to his community involvement, where he was a proud member of the American Legion Post No. 158, VFW No. 10495, and the Teamsters Union 1949.
He will be remembered for his tinkering in the garage and the precious moments he spent with his family.
Visitation will be held on July 18, 2023, from 10-11 am at the Ford & Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill, Mo.,
Funeral Service will follow at 11 a.m., officiated by Pastor Don Estes.
Burial will be at Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery in Marble Hill, with military honors provided by the United States Army and VFW Post No. 5900.
