KANSAS CITY – Prices in the Midwest Region, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), advanced 0.3 percent in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
The May increase was mainly influenced by a 0.3 percent rise in the all items less food and energy index. The food index increased 0.7 percent, while the energy index declined 1.2 percent.
Over the last 12 months, the CPI-U advanced 3.7 percent. The index for all items less food and energy increased 5.0 percent over the year, while food prices rose 6.8 percent. Energy prices fell 13.0 percent, largely the result of declining prices for gasoline.
