Ashcroft applauds Senate passage of farmland bill restricting foreign land ownership

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft commends the Missouri Senate for the passage of HB 903 – which would change the laws regarding foreign ownership of agricultural land in Missouri.

From the beginning Ashcroft has led efforts to bring together members of the House and Senate on this critical issue affecting Missouri farmers. Ashcroft was instrumental in drafting the bill and has vigorously worked for several months alongside bill sponsor State Representative Mike Haffner (R-55).

“I am grateful for the efforts of both chambers who participated in moving this forward,” Ashcroft said.  “This bill forbids foreign companies and known enemies of the United States; countries like China – who do not have our best interest in mind, from buying agricultural land in Missouri.  Regulating foreign land ownership is necessary to better protect Missourians.”

Ashcroft will continue to work closely with the Missouri legislature in efforts to advance this legislation to the governor’s desk.
