Ste. Genevieve to host its 35th Annual L’ Ecole du Soldat

STE. GENEVIEVE – The 35th Annual L’ Ecole du Soldat (“School of the Soldier”—focused on history of mid-1700’s to early 1800’s) will be held April 14, 15 and 16, 2023 in this former French settlement on the Mississippi River.

Presented by Milice de Ste. Famille and the City of Ste. Genevieve, all of the presentations are free and open to the public.

Morris Sheppard Arnold, who was born in Texarkana, Texas, in l94l was educated at Exeter, Yale, the University of Arkansas, Harvard Law School, and the University of London. He was first in his class at the University of Arkansas Law School and was editor-in-chief of the law review, and earned LL.M. and S.J.D. degrees from Harvard Law School. He has taught at numerous American law schools, including Indiana, Stanford, Texas, Michigan, and the University of Pennsylvania where he also served as a vice president of the university and was a professor of law and history. Judge Arnold has published ten books and numerous articles, mostly on the subject of legal history and the history of colonial Arkansas. His latest book is The Arkansas Post of Louisiana, which includes photographs by his wife, Gail Arnold. In 1994 the French government named him a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques for his work on eighteenth-century Louisiana, and he is a member of the American Antiquarian Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as a United States District Judge for seven years before being elevated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit on May 26, l992. He also served as a judge and presiding judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Court of Review from 2008 to 2013.

 

 

Hairan Zuchelli is a Designer, Consultant, Textile Artist, and researcher of ethnic garments. With her work she helps productions create life experiences possible through manufacturing, precision engineering, technical innovation, and fiber artistry. As a dress historian she researches African Diaspora in colonial Latin America and Creole in the United States and takes particular interest in maintaining the memory, heritage, and visual culture representation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Brazilian born and residing in the United States, the artist is a Neo-tropicalist and is the creator of the project “Baronesa Brasileira” (“The Brazilian Baroness”) where she talks about Brazilian BIPOC history in an accessible and decolonial way through the analysis and study of its various art. She started her love for history when she went to law school at age 16 and found out about the lawsuits some enslaved women were able to file against their captors. She spent the last years conducting research in the archives of Brazil, Portugal, Spain, and Italy examining notarial, naval, and legal documents of the period. Being so young, she went back to school to study Fashion Design and Pedagogy, and now, back in the education field, she is certified by Cornell University in Diversity and Inclusion and assists productions on stage and screen to tell minorities stories more accurately. She is currently working on her book of the project The Brazilian Baroness. Law, teaching, and Arts are her true loves and above all, samba. Like any “malandra”, she is another baroness and academic of samba culture, where she has learned some of the trades that started her career. That’s Hairan Zuchelli, mixed-race, of humble origin, one more daughter of a Maria.

 

Suzanne Corbett is a national award-winning food/feature writer and media producer, and food historian. Her passion is history, especially food history. Food history has been her career focus, contributing to local and regional historic sites and institutions through her work as a research historian and development of interpretive foodways. Currently, she works with the National Parks Service at The Gateway Arch, U.S. Grant National Historic Site and Ste Genevieve Na national Historical Park on various foodways programs. Suzanne is the author of the award-winning books The Gilded Table: Recipes and Table History from the Campbell House and Pushcarts & Stalls: The Soulard Market History Cookbook and Unique Eats and Eateries of St. Louis; and is co-authored of A Culinary History of Missouri: Foodways and Iconic dishes from the Show-me State. As the producer/writer of the documentary short Vintage Missouri: 200 Years of Missouri Wine, she won a Telly Award. In addition, Suzanne is a recipient of the Missouri Media Award from the Department of Agriculture Missouri Wine and Grape Program and was awarded the Quest Award from the National Federation of Press Women/Missouri affiliate, which recognizes individuals whose work reflects an enduring quest for the highest standards. Suzanne holds a master’s degree in media communications from Webster University, is a Certified Culinary Professional with the International Association of Culinary Professionals and is a member of Les Dames D’Escoffer.
