STE. GENEVIEVE – As spring time approaches and tourist season is just around the corner, it has been brought to our attention that many American flags in the area are in need of attention or replacement.
Whereas the flag is a symbol of our country and what thousands of Americans gave their lives to defend, we want to publish some of the proper rules of etiquette for the American Flag.
The flag should always be flown at full staff unless ordered to half mast to honor either honor or mourning.
The flag shall never touch the floor or ground.
Only flags that have been constructed for outdoor display should be flown outside. If flown at night it must be illuminated.
When a flag becomes torn or tattered it should be lowered and properly retired. The local American Legion has a container for flag disposal on the outside of the building.
When flown with other flags, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point.
These are only a few of the rules of flag etiquette.
Should you like more information, it is available at the local VFW and American Legion or online.
New flags are available in various sizes at Rozier’s Country Mart, VFW Post 2210 and American Legion Post 150.
