Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen will consider creating two city posts

STE. GENEVIEVE – The Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen will consider creating two city posts: an assistant city administrator and a part time fire chief, when it meets in a work session Thursday, following its regular meeting.

City Administrator Happy Welch has released the tentative agenda for the work session.

In it, he wrote, the board had discussed creating the two positions previously.

“(The assistant city administrator) will be someone who is interested  in learning more about the city administrator position and willing to take on more responsibility/projects/oversight in Ste. Genevieve city government. This person will also be the responsible individual when I am out of the office,” he said in a memo to the board included in the packets for the work session.

The packet also included a job description Welch developed.

In it, Welch wrote: (The city administrator) performs difficult professional and administrative work assisting the City Administrator in a variety of assignments relating to the planing, direction, control and evaluation of the operations and programs of the city government; oversees the Community Development Department and does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the City Administrator. Supervision may be exercised over all city staff in the absence of the City Administrator.

Regarding the part-time fire chief position, Welch noted that $38,000 has been included in the FY 23 budget to pay for the position. Alternatively, the funds could be used in other ways: more pay for the volunteers, hold them for the next fiscal year, reallocate for another purpose in the fire department or set the funds aside for a future fire truck and revisit the issue during the FY 2024 budget process.

The proposed job description for the part time fire chief includes: manage all activities within the Fire Department assuring smooth day-to-day operation, Responsible for budgeting, long-range planning, establishing department policy and correct management of fire and disaster emergencies. Supervise all volunteer staff.
