ALTENBURG – The East Perry Community Fair in Altenburg opens on Friday, September 23 with a parade and continues its traditional country fair through Saturday, September 24. After returning from a one-year absence due to COVID and with great weather, the “Best Little Fair in the Land” had record crowds last year and organizers hope for another great year.
The parade opening the fair will begin at 1:30 pm on Friday followed by the opening ceremonies. The popular 4X4 Truck Pull returns on Friday evening at 7:00 pm as does the fair’s largest spectator draw, the “World Championship” Mule Jumping Competition at 4:00 pm on Saturday. Following a successful first year a Hot Rod Tractor Pull will return on Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.
The mainstay of the fair is still the competition judging of livestock, crops, and home economics entries as well as many classes for 4-H and FFA projects. Two of the largest competitions on Saturday will be one of the ten largest beef cattle shows in Missouri in the show barn at 9:00 am and the draft horse and mule show in the arena also beginning at 10:00 am. The annual 4-H and FFA Youth Animal Sale is scheduled for 5:00 pm on Saturday.
The musical entertainment will see a change on Saturday afternoon as rising stars from the region will take the stage beginning at 1:00 pm. Logan Allan Chapman, who grew up in the Chaffee area, will be followed by Carly Green and Ian Ferguson who are both from the Perryville area. On Friday evening at 6:30 pm the group Another Round which is made up of Kevin Engert, Holly Benton and Brad and Brian Krauss will provide the music. Randy Preston and his Generation group will be on stage on Saturday beginning at 7:00 pm. Randy performs with his daughter Dani Bishop and Tim Thornton, Scott Speakman, and George Wham in the band.
In addition to the entertainment and the multiple departments of competition there will be a big array of commercial booths exhibiting products and services for the farm and home, games and rides for children, and seventeen foods stands. The great variety of food available includes traditional offerings like hamburgers, catfish fillets, funnel cakes, and bratwurst along with newer choices like Philly cheesesteak, nachos, tacos, pizza, and blooming onions. Of course, the famous grilled cheese sandwiches remain a part of the lineup.
With the exception of livestock trucks and pull trucks and tractors, fair goers are reminded that they must enter the parking areas by way of Poplar Street unless otherwise directed by the parking staff. The fair recommends that fairgoers plan to arrive early for to reduce their waiting times in traffic. This will give them an opportunity to view some of the exhibits and enjoy some of the great food that the event and its outside vendors have available.
