Campground host opportunities in the Mark Twain National Forest

ROLLA—Mark Twain National Forest is looking for campground hosts for the 2022 season.  Campground hosting is a fun and rewarding volunteer experience that gets people outside and serving the public.

There are four sites currently outreaching for campground hosts on the Forest:

  • Lane Spring Campground on the Houston/Rolla/Cedar Creek Ranger District—contact Tray Hall at 417-967-4194.
  • Markham Springs Campground on the Poplar Bluff Ranger District—contact Ed Sherman at 573-996-2153.
  • Greer Crossing Campground on the Eleven Point Ranger District—contact Ed Sherman at 573-996-2153.
  • Sutton Bluff Campground on the Salem Ranger District—contact Christopher Woods at 573-438-5427.

To learn more about these hosting opportunities, online, visit www.volunteer.gov and search for “Mark Twain National Forest”. Anyone interested in hosting at one of these sites, should call the listed recreation staff.  They would also be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Although campground hosting is a volunteer position, the Forest offers a small reimbursement per day for incidental costs.  Incidental reimbursement varies depending on sites. Host duties will include answering visitors’ questions, helping ensure campers keep clean campsites and clean them before the next camper; cleaning restrooms and showers, taking water tests, and posting reservations.  These duties may vary between recreation sites.  In general, though, a host keeps the campground running smoothly for visitors to enjoy.

As this is a volunteer position that interacts regularly with the public, applicants will have a background check conducted before being selected.

Hosting at a campground is a great way to meet people from across Missouri, the nation, and even around the world.  It gives you the opportunity to live and work at a campground and share in the fun experiences of people coming to their national forest lands to recreate.

“We have had some amazing campground host volunteers in the past on this Forest, and I love to hear about their positive encounters with campers,” stated Jane Mobley, Manpower Development Specialist for Mark Twain National Forest.  She added, “It can be a very rewarding experience!”
