Behind the Levee–Protecting Ste. Gen from the Mississippi

The Ste. Genevieve Museum Learning Center invites you for a behind-the-scenes look at the 3.5-mile urban design levee that reduces the risk of flooding from the Mississippi River. The program will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 a.m. at the Orris Theater in Ste. Genevieve.

Savannah Worth, geotechnical engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers, gives an overview of the presentation.

Worth says the levee will not prevent floods and it needs constant maintenance.

You’ll also hear from:

Mark Alvey, retired geotechnical engineer who designed key features of the levee
Vern Bauman and Tom Okenfuss, levee district board members

The program will look back at the historic floods of 1973 and 1993, and discuss the millions of dollars in potential flood damage the levee has helped prevent since its construction, and explain what it takes to keep this critical system ready for the next flood.

The program is sponsored by Equipment Pro Incorporated in Ste. Genevieve. The presentation is free to museum members, otherwise admission will apply.
