JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that President Donald J. Trump has approved his request for a major disaster declaration for 10 counties in response to tornadoes, straight-line winds, severe storms, large hail, and flooding that swept across the state April 23-28, 2026.
“Local officials have worked tirelessly and in close coordination with both the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to document significant damage in the areas impacted by repetitive storms,” Governor Kehoe said. “We thank President Trump for approving Missouri’s major disaster declaration and greatly appreciate the critical work handled by our local response agencies and the recovery efforts that are already underway.”
The President’s action makes the FEMA Public Assistance program available to local governments and qualifying nonprofits for the repair and restoration of damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure as well as reimbursement of emergency response costs in Carroll, Chariton, Greene, Holt, Howard, Monroe, Randolph, Ripley, Saline, and St. Francois counties.
Governor Kehoe requested the federal disaster declaration on May 22, following joint Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA) that were conducted the week prior. Damage to public infrastructure and emergency response costs were estimated at more than $36 million.
FEMA has informed the state that the Governor’s request for FEMA Individual Assistance in Clay, Gentry, Greene, Holt, Randolph and Saline counties is under review, as is the request for FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program assistance.
This week, joint PDAs with FEMA, SEMA, and local officials have been ongoing following a stretch of severe storms that heavily impacted several regions of the state June 4-18, 2026. After substantial initial damage assessments were submitted by local officials, Governor Kehoe requested joint PDAs for 29 counties on June 18. As more damage was documented locally, five more counties were also assessed. The 34 counties are: Adair, Andrew, Callaway, Camden, Cape Girardeau, Dade, Daviess, Gasconade, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Hickory, Holt, Jasper, Knox, Lewis, Linn, Macon, Marion, Mercer, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Newton, Nodaway, Osage, Polk, Putman, Scott, Shelby, Sullivan, Vernon, Webster and Worth.
