SGHS students explore live ESPN2 sports production at SEMO

STE. GENEVIEVE – Students in the Ste. Genevieve High School broadcasting program traveled to Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) recently for a behind-the-scenes look at live sports broadcasting and video production.

Led by broadcasting teacher Josh Banks, students toured SEMO’s broadcasting facilities and observed the production setup for an ESPN2 softball broadcast. During the visit, students explored the central control room, which was operated by SEMO students, and learned about the coordination required to produce a live athletic event.

Sierra Williams, SEMO’s broadcast and video production coordinator, guided students through the experience and explained the different roles involved in the production process. Students also toured a soundproof audio recording room where the announcer called the game live while watching the video feed from the production team.

At the softball field, students observed multiple camera operators filming from various locations, including behind home plate, along the third-base line and in center field. The experience provided students with a firsthand look at the teamwork and communication necessary to produce a live collegiate sports broadcast.

During the trip, students also connected with former Ste. Genevieve graduate Collin Abt, who shared insight into the broadcasting field and SEMO’s program opportunities.

The visit gave students the opportunity to explore careers in broadcasting, video production and sports media while gaining new ideas and perspectives to bring back to SGHS.
