Sparta Community Hospital highlights $111.7 Million economic impact during National Hospital Week

SPARTA – In celebration of National Hospital Week, Sparta Community Hospital is recognizing not only the care provided to patients across the region, but also the important role the organization plays in supporting the local economy, workforce, and overall strength of the communities it serves.

According to a newly released Economic Impact Report prepared with assistance from the Illinois Health and Hospital Association, Sparta Community Hospital generates an estimated $111.7 million annual economic impact throughout the region and supports approximately 700 jobs through both direct employment and the ripple effect of healthcare spending throughout the local economy.

While National Hospital Week is often a time to recognize physicians, nurses, clinical staff, support services, and volunteers for the care they provide each day, Sparta Community Hospital says it is also an opportunity to celebrate everything rural hospitals make possible for the communities they serve.

“National Hospital Week is really about celebrating the people behind healthcare and everything they help make possible for our communities,” said Jennifer Barbour, Director of Marketing & Relations at Sparta Community Hospital. “When people think about hospitals, they naturally think about healthcare first — and they should. But rural hospitals also play a huge role in the health and success of a community beyond patient care.

“The jobs we provide support families. Our employees spend money at local businesses. We partner with local organizations and schools. Patients are able to receive care closer to home instead of traveling elsewhere. All of that creates a ripple effect that helps strengthen the entire community.”

The Illinois Health and Hospital Association reports that for every hospital job in Illinois, an additional 1.6 jobs are created in other sectors of the economy through healthcare-related spending. With Sparta Community Hospital District supporting approximately 700 jobs throughout the region, the organization’s impact extends far beyond healthcare alone — helping support local businesses, strengthen families, and contribute to the vitality of the communities it serves.

“Sparta Community Hospital is dedicated to supporting our community,” Barbour said. “We are proud not only of the role we play in strengthening the local economy and providing access to care close to home, but also of the people who provide that care every single day. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our team is here to deliver lifesaving care and healthcare services that enhance the health and well-being of both individuals and the communities we serve.”

The report also reflects the wide-reaching impact of Sparta Community Hospital’s services, including hospital care, primary care clinics, specialty services, rehabilitation, home health, behavioral health partnerships, mobile health services, and community outreach initiatives.

During National Hospital Week, Sparta Community Hospital is celebrating the people behind that impact through employee appreciation activities, themed celebrations, and community events. This year’s “This Is Us” theme recognizes the teamwork, compassion, and dedication of employees across the organization — from direct patient care to the many behind-the-scenes roles that help keep healthcare moving every day. Guided by the organization’s Believe in Better commitment and Care With Purpose culture, employees play a vital role not only in patient care, but in strengthening the communities served.

National Hospital Week is celebrated annually to recognize the vital contributions hospitals and healthcare workers make to the health and well-being of their communities.
