Governor Mike Kehoe proclaims May as ‘Beef Month’

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –  Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, acting on behalf of cattlemen and cattlewomen throughout the state, proclaimed May as Beef Month in Missouri. Governor Kehoe presented the proclamation to members of the Missouri Beef Industry Council (MBIC), Missouri Cattlemen’s Association (MCA) and local beef producers during a ceremony at America’s Heartland Packing in Wright City.

“From helping make Missouri a national leader in beef production, to supporting jobs and communities across our state, cattle producers play an essential role in Missouri’s success,” said Governor Mike Kehoe. “As a first-generation cattle farmer myself, I am proud to recognize May as Beef Month and to honor the farm and ranch families who continue to feed the world.”

Beef production is a driving force in the state’s agriculture economy, producing nearly $2 billion in sales and supporting more than 40,000 jobs.

“Beef production is a leading segment of Missouri agriculture, contributing significantly to the $93.7 billion industry,” said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. “Missouri cattle producers are unmatched in the quality of product they provide. It is an industry worthy of celebration in May and all year.”

“During Beef Month, we celebrate the hardworking farm and ranch families across Missouri who are dedicated to raising high-quality beef,” said MBIC Board Chair Tracey Mershon. “Consumers today want to know where their food comes from, and our producers are committed to transparency, animal care and sustainability. Beef remains a delicious, wholesome source of essential nutrients, and we’re proud to share that story.”

Missouri ranks third nationally in the number of beef cows with nearly two million head and is consistently among the leading states for total cattle production. The meat processing industry contributes nearly $6 million to the state’s economy, according to a study showing the economic contribution of Missouri agriculture.

“Beef Month is a meaningful time for those of us in the cattle business to reflect on the trust consumers place in us every day,” said MCA President Anita Vanderwert. “Raising beef is not just our livelihood; it’s how we support our families, strengthen rural economies and contribute to Missouri’s agricultural legacy. We’re proud to produce a nutritious, high-quality product and grateful to consumers who continue to choose beef.”
