SG firefighters battle simultaneous house, limb fires

STE. GENEVIEVE – The Ste. Genevieve and Ste. Genevieve County Fire Districts responded to a house fire in the 700 block of Biltmore Street in Ste. Genevieve Monday afternoon.

According to the Ste. Genevieve Fire District report, the alarm was turned in around 2:14 p.m.

Initial reports indicated that the whole front of the house was on fire, however, a Ste. Genevieve police officer was first on the scene and reported heavy smoke with little fire. 

The first Ste Genevieve Fire District truck arrived approximately seven minutes after dispatch to find a story and one-half residence with heavy smoke and some flame on the front of the house.

Two fire hoses were pulled with one being used on the exterior and the other on an aggressive interior attack. 

Due to the fire conditions on arrival a second alarm was requested and later canceled before they arrived. 

The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes. 

While on the scene of the structure fire, the Ste. Genevieve Fire District was a.so dispatched to a brush fire at the city limb disposal site on Division Street.  Two units released from the structure fire to handle the brush fire along with an additional truck from the SGFPD station which was used to wet down the fire and surrounding area. 

Units remained on scene of the structure fire for approximately one and one-half hours overhauling and making sure there was no fire extension. 

Fire damage was limited to the roof of the front porch and front wall of the house.  On the interior of the structure there was some smoke and water damage.  The fire was believed to start on the front porch, cause undetermined at this time, but did not appear suspicious.

These two calls were the 11th and 12th  in the past seven days for the Ste. Genevieve Fire District.
