JEFFERSON CITY – Susan Klein, Executive Director, Missouri Right to Life issued the following statement after the Missouri House approved legislation to protect babies born alive after an attempted abortion.
“Missouri Right to Life applauds the Missouri House for passing legislation that will ensure that babies born-alive after an abortion attempt receive the same care as a baby born through the natural process. We thank the sponsors, Representatives Brian Seitz and Holly Jones, for bringing this life-saving legislation forward for debate and passage. The House Bill, combined in committee, is HB 1667 & 2294; the Senate Bill is SB 999 and is sponsored by Senator Brad Hudson.
“Knowing that this is critical to the protection of children born-alive from an abortion, HB 1667 & 2294 was the first bill to pass the Missouri House in this 2026 legislative session. This life-saving legislation received 103 Republican votes. Sadly, 40 Democrats voted against protecting these babies born-alive after an attempted abortion. Opponents of this bill claim that these babies are already protected, but this is not true. A baby born-alive from an attempted abortion is different than a normal delivery. When a woman signs a consent form for the abortion, she is not expecting a live birth. In addition, the abortionist was engaged to produce a dead baby. Missouri does not have an explicit protection for these precious babies born-alive after an attempted abortion and fighting for life.
“HB 1667 & 2294 and SB 999 are common-sense bills to protect these vulnerable tiny babies that are fighting to survive.”
HB 1667 and 2294 now moves to the Senate for consideration. SB 999 was voted out of the Senate Families, Seniors and Health Committee on February 4, 2026 and should move to the Senate calendar soon.
Missouri Right to Life thanks every Representative that voted in support of this life-saving legislation,” Klein added. “As opponents try to justify opposition to this bill by claiming that the law already protects these babies, keep in mind that there is documented evidence that babies are born-alive from an attempted abortion and left to die. This legislation is absolutely necessary.”
