STE, GENEVIEVE – The latest addition to the Sainte Genevieve Art Guild’s Public Sculpture Project was recently dedicated.
The sculpture by Matthew E. Ziegler (1897-1981) is titled “Eagle Rising” and was installed as a tribute to Ziegler’s lifelong contributions to the art community.

Pictured left to right are Sandra Cabot, President, Ste. Genevieve County Community Foundation, Cathy and Mike Hankins, and, representing the Sainte Genevieve Art Guild, President Carolyn Bach, Historian Anna Schilli Kirchner and Vice President Juanita Rapp Wyman.
Ziegler was instrumental in the establishment and success of the Sainte Genevieve Art Colony during the 1930s. For four decades, he kept the flame alive, teaching art and being the welcoming presence that encouraged dozens of renowned artists to come here, laying the foundation for Ste. Genevieve as an arts destination.

This new addition was made possible by members of the community. The sculpture is on loan from Mike and Cathy Hankins. The sculpture base was funded by a grant from the Ste. Genevieve County Community Foundation and a donation from Brock and Megan Gibson. The sculpture was installed by Stan Winkler, and is situated on county property between the courthouse and the Sainte Genevieve Art Center and Art Museum at the corner of Merchant and DuBourg Place. Several more additions are planned for 2026.
