PERRYVILLE, Mo. — Perry County is taking a proactive step toward strengthening local emergency response efforts by hosting its first training session with the American Red Cross to begin forming a local Disaster Action Team (DAT).

The American Red Cross training, that was facilitated through Perry County Emergency Management, was held Saturday, January 10, at the Perry County Joint Justice Center, with 14 individuals participating. The session marks the beginning of a local partnership focused on building a team of trained volunteers who can respond quickly when disaster strikes—whether it’s a house fire, severe storm, flooding, or other emergencies that impact Perry County residents.

A Disaster Action Team is made up of trained community members who serve the American Red Cross Volunteer Corp to provide immediate assistance following a disaster. They will be certified by the Red Cross to work for the Red Cross as volunteers to not only serve Perry County, but anywhere the Red Cross might need them. These teams help meet urgent needs such as temporary shelter, emergency supplies, and support services for families experiencing a crisis.

“Perry County is committed to ensuring our residents have access to timely, reliable help during emergencies,” said Perry County Emergency Management Director Patrick Naeger. “By working with the American Red Cross to establish a Disaster Action Team, we are investing in a stronger, more prepared community.”

County officials expressed appreciation to the American Red Cross for providing expert instruction and resources to help develop a team that can serve the community during critical moments.
Perry County encourages residents who are interested in volunteering to consider joining the Disaster Action Team. Volunteers will receive training and support through the American Red Cross and will play a vital role in helping neighbors during times of need.
