PERRYVILLE — We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Perry County Historical Society director Bill Hart.
Bill devoted his life to preserving and sharing the history of Perry County and the State of Missouri.
His roots in Perry County ran deep, with family ties reaching back to the earliest days of settlement in Southeast Missouri. His passion for history was not only professional, but deeply personal.
Bill served for many years as a leader in historic preservation, including 13 years with the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation, where he served as Executive Director.
He later brought his knowledge and dedication home, serving as Director of the Perry County Historical Society, where he worked tirelessly to collect, safeguard, and tell the stories of our community.
We were honored that Bill lent us his talents to give voice to Perry County’s history as the narrator of the documentary on the construction of the Perry County Joint Justice Center, as well as the county’s earlier courthouses and jails—ensuring these important chapters were recorded with care and respect.
Bill worked with county staffers to gather photos and facts to create this digital record of a monumental achievement.
Bill’s legacy is one of stewardship, scholarship, and quiet devotion to place. His loss is deeply felt, but his work will continue to guide and inspire those who care for Perry County’s history.
An author, historian and scholar whose loss will be deeply felt by many. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
Thank you, Bill, for leaving your mark on this community and contributing your talents so we may never forget where we came from.
