STE. GENEVIEVE, MO — Health professionals at Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) are urging community members to take preventive measures against seasonal influenza as flu activity increases across the county. Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can spread rapidly in homes, schools, workplaces, and public spaces, particularly during this time of year.
According to hospital professionals, simple precautions can significantly reduce the spread of the flu and protect vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with existing health conditions.
Vaccination remains the first line of defense and it not only protects individuals but also helps reduce overall transmission within the community.
“Annual flu vaccination continues to be the most effective way to prevent flu-related illness and complications,” stated Jennifer McBride-Hobbs, Chief Nursing Officer at SGCMH. “Residents are encouraged to get vaccinated at healthcare centers, pharmacies, schools, and community clinics.”
SGCMH Clinicians Emphasize Everyday Preventive Actions such as:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow
- Avoid touching the face, especially eyes, nose, and mouth
- Wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces when flu is circulating
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces regularly
Here are some additional steps you can take for you and your family.
Stay Home When Sick
Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms—such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, or fatigue—are strongly encouraged to stay home from school, work, and social activities. Staying home while ill helps prevent further spread and supports faster recovery.
Healthy Habits Support Strong Immunity
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also help the body fight infections. Health experts recommend adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and staying well hydrated throughout flu season.
Community Cooperation Is Key
Health professionals stress that flu prevention is a shared responsibility. Schools, businesses, families, and community organizations are encouraged to promote awareness, support vaccination efforts, and reinforce preventive practices.
“By working together and following these precautions, we can reduce the impact of flu and keep our community healthier and safer,” McBride-Hobbs said.
For more information on flu prevention and vaccination, residents are encouraged to contact local health authorities or their healthcare providers.
